Our History
Established
more than 78 years ago in 1933 when the British Oil Burner Manufacturer’s
Association (BOBMA) was formed in response to competition from imported
combustion equipment.
In the 1950s the membership of BOBMA was widened to include oil fired
boiler manufacturers. The discovery of natural gas in the North Sea resulted
in member companies manufacturing gas burners for commercial and industrial
or process use. At this point it became known as the British Oil and
Gas Firing Equipment Manufacturer’s Association (BOGFEMA).
1974 saw another change in name for the Association to encompass solid
fuel and for the last 30 years the body has been called the British Combustion
Equipment Manufacturers Association (BCEMA).
In 2002 the terms of membership were changed to allow for designers,
manufacturers and solid fuel-burning equipment as well as those involved
in the servicing of equipment and even supply or storage of fuel became
eligible for BCEMA membership.
In 2003 the Council decided the time was right to widen the remit of
the organisation. To engage in all aspects of energy related business
activities, work more closely with government, non-governmental offices,
research establishments and industry trade associations towards a greener
future.
In May 2004 the Association became the ICOM Energy Association.
